Delegates to the AGM of Brighton Pavilion CLP met on Wednesday 1 March 2023 to receive the annual reports of our Executive Committee (known as the ‘EC’ or ‘Exec’) elected at the December 2021 AGM and to elect a new Exec for 2023, to run our Party and administer its business in the constituency. You can find out more about our new Exec members on this page. (And, for a bit of fun, see if you spot any EC member in the photo above!
Find out more about each of our Exec members below:
CHAIR – Mohammed Asaduzzaman (Hanover & Elm Grove) – Mohammed follows our longstanding Chair Jon Rogers who died in early 2023 after living bravely with cancer since 2018. Jon had been Pavilion Labour’s Chair since the CLP was reconvened in February 2017 and is fondly remembered by us all.
Read more about Mohammed below as he has been our CLP BAME Officer for several years.
SECRETARY – Maureen Winder (Roundhill) with Tina Cox (Hanover & Elm Grove)
Well known local Labour organiser and campaigner Maureen Winder, is job-sharing this role with Tina and sees the year ahead as critical. Maureen intends for us all to make sure a strong and principled Labour message can build trust and alliances with residents and voters ahead of this May’s local elections. Maureen will work with Tina to build-up our new branches following the boundary review reorganisation, and support and encourage more members to engage in campaigning, with organised debates and other events which will inspire our thinking and enable us all to reach out with policies which can make a real difference to everyone.
TREASURER – Amanda Evans (Roundhill) – our thanks to Amanda who has agreed to continue in this role for another year.
VICE-CHAIR/MEMBERSHIP – Sarah Fulford (Hanover & Elm Grove): I wish to form a supportive team with branch membership secretaries, and assist all branches to welcome new members, explore their views and encourage involvement. I believe members should be encouraged to continue to participate, keep strong voice, and fight against attacks on democracy within the Party. Our members make our Party.
There are several current IT problems with contacting members, which I will work to address. It is especially imperative that we reach members from, and strengthen communication through, our Equalities branches.
POLICY OFFICER – Lewis Kranat (Hollingdean & Fiveways): I’m Lewis and I re-joined the Labour Party when Jeremy Corbyn was elected to campaign for a sustainable green economy based on shared ownership and investment in public services. I teach maths and previously worked in IT so can manage the statistical and technical side of campaigning.
We should vigorously oppose a government that drives inequality and subverts democracy. We should campaign for an economic model based on investment, shared ownership, full employment and a universal basic income. Labour must prioritise the environment and climate breakdown, while continuing the campaign for peace and social justice – as a socialist Green New Deal would achieve.
WOMEN’S OFFICER – Tina Cox (Hanover & Elm Grove) with Amanda Evans (Roundhill).
Tina and Amanda hope to further women’s participation by:
- Making the CLP’s activities welcoming and inclusive, enabling women to be heard and their views taken into account
- Co-ordinating input into national and regional events including women’s conference and elections
- Prioritising issues identified by the branch including transgender rights and period poverty
- Collaborating with other equalities branches towards mutual understanding of intersectionality, protected characteristics and barriers to participation by working class women
- Networking and campaigning alongside grassroots local community groups to further socialist aims and activities
YOUTH OFFICER – details to follow
BAME OFFICER – Mohammed Asaduzzaman (Hanover & Elm Grove) with Maureen Winder (Roundhill): The BAME Branch is a hub for engagement, debate and campaigning for all members who identify as Black, Asian and minority ethnic (or, ‘BAME’). Maureen and Mohammed work collaboratively to raise the profile of BAME campaigns, and engage in widespread liaison and meetings on issues such as unconscious bias and anti-racism training, intersectionality, Covid impact, and discussions with Operation Black Vote.
Maureen and Mohammed regularly attend meetings of the Brighton and Hove Labour Group of Councillors (known as “Labour Group”) as BAME observers, and continue to campaign for an action plan to increase the selection of BAME candidates so that Labour’s representatives better reflect our diverse city. We need to increase BAME Labour membership, empower BAME young people and ensure ongoing Labour Party training to tackle racism, including understanding and defining Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. We look forward to working with you. Email Mohammed on mazaman@hotmail.co.uk .
POLITICAL EDUCATION OFFICER – Theresa Mackey (Preston Park): As a teacher, I have extensive experience, skills, knowledge and understanding of education. I will endeavour to provide the space for the exploration of ideas and policies – and an ultimate commitment to empowering people through political education.
DISABILITY OFFICER – Theresa Mackey (Preston Park): The cuts in living standards imposed by the Conservative Government have had a perniciously detrimental effect on the lives of disabled people and their families, undermining access to education, social care and justice.
I shall continue to support disabled Labour Party members and indeed all others in society who have lived experience of any aspects of disability. I am fully committed to the social model of disability as encapsulated in ‘Nothing about you, without you’. As an active member of Pavilion Labour’s Disabled Members’ Branch, I want to support its development and help more disabled members be active, get organised and encourage better self-representation on the council.
COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA OFFICER – to be confirmed
