Disabled Members’ Branch

Pavilion Labour Disabled Members’ Branch is for all members of Brighton Pavilion Constituency Labour Party who live with a chronic health condition, impairment or disability.

We aim to meet at least quarterly for a discussion with speakers.  We also hold informal campaigning / leaflet-writing sessions, usually at the Party office, and occasional coffee afternoons (not mornings!).  We run the Pavilion Labour stall at Disability Pride Brighton and lead Pavilion Labour’s campaigning on disability issues, as well as getting involved with all aspects of Pavilion Labour policies and activities which are of importance to us as disabled members.

At our last Branch AGM, we elected Theresa, Pavilion Labour’s Disability Officer, as our chair, Judy as our vice-chair, and Claire as our secretary.  Thanks also to Dave who is now helping out as our assistant secretary.  We have developed accessibility standards for Pavilion Labour, which have been adopted as Brighton Pavilion CLP’s accessibility guidelines and are now applied throughout our Party.

Members can download our May 2022 newsletter here, our March 2022 newsletter here and read our members’ report from 2021 Labour Conference here, or in more accessible format at Making Labour Conference Accessible.  Meanwhile, if you want to find out more about Labour Party policy on disabilities, you could read Nothing About You Without You, our Party’s 2017 manifesto with and for disabled people, or Breaking Down Barriers, our Party’s 2019 disability manifesto.

Pavilion Labour’s Disabled Members’ Branch has highlighted campaigns on local and national issues, most recently calling on Labour to ensure access for all to the online events which have become so popular during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Previously our branch led Pavilion Labour to adopt the policy to scrap Universal Credit long before this was national Labour policy – and we maintain our Party’s commitment to a fair and just social security system for all.  We are committed supporters of rail and bus public ownership, and call for proper staffing on all transport networks, so that travel is accessible for everyone.

Thanks to everyone who gets involved in our campaigns.  We hope to see you again soon at one of our activities.
